Update on Oliver, the Orphan Puppy

Oliver is doing great! He's just over a month old now and is eating on his own. It seems he's even crate trained himself. He pees in his cage but waits for me to let him out to go poop. ( I keep him in a big cage when I'm not home to keep him safe). He plays with the big dogs and cats. He's been de-wormed and once old enough he'll be vaccinated.

Contact me if you are interested in adopting Oliver.

Update on the dogs that were in car accidents

Remember the 2 dogs we rescued a few days ago who had been victims in car accidents?

The photos above show the brown dog, who is now called Lucky, not long after he had an operation on his pelvis. He will rest up for 10 days before returning to the vet for a check-up.
The other photos show the black dog, who is now called Prince, just after his operation. He has a metal cast on his leg to keep it straight. He'll return to the vet in 10 days to see how things are going.
If you would like to learn more about these two lads, please call 02-28338820 or email inquiries@animalstaiwan.org

Two hit and runs in one week

This week Animals Taiwan received two separate calls about hit and run accidents involving dogs.
The first one was in the north of Taipei, a feeding lady whom we help with CNT/TNR called us about a dog which had been hit by a car and couldn't walk. She had no transportation so couldn't get it to us. We went out but didn't find the dog. We called the feeding lady and asked her to call us when she next saw the dog and to stay with it until we got there. She called us back after a little while and we went to find the dog. This time we found it. He was in a bad way and couldn't move. He was scared but seemed to know we wanted to help him. He's friendly and we feel he has a great chance of getting back on his feet, literally. He has a broken jaw and suspected hip and leg fractures. He will be receiving medical treatment and we'll keep you updated on his progress.
The second one was in Hsin Tien. Again a feeding lady who we are in contact with to help with CNR/TNR and adoptions called us about a male dog in a hit and run. The feeding lady had actually called us a few days before to say this dog had been hit. However, due to adrenalin he had run off and hadn't been seen since. Sunday night, however, he was spotted. We asked the feeding lady to stay with him and we drove out to pick him up. Again he was scared and confused but he let us help him without any fight. He is a little luckier than the first one and only has a leg fracture. He has a great deal of swelling so we will have to wait until the swelling goes down before he can be operated on.
Both of these dogs will under go operations and we will keep them safe while they are recuperating.
We can only continue to do these rescues with your support. Please donate to Animals Taiwan so we can continue to help those who need it most. We have limited recourses but we try our hardest to help every case. With your continued kindness we can continue to help these animals.

Newest rescue : 2 month old Puppies need homes~

Animals Taiwan recieved a call about 3 puppies hiding in a drain pipe/ditch in Mucha. So we went to investigate and we found Soybean, Sesame, and Peanut hiding in a hole near the drain area. While they were safe for the moment, there was a deeper hole next to where they were hiding, which was sure to be flooded once it starts raining. The three of them looked healthy but a bit scared.
Rita dived in and brought them out one by one. They screamed a bit during the rescue, but quieted down once they realized they were safe.
We'll be keeping an eye out for the mother so we can get her spayed ASAP.
The three pups are at the centre, where they will be examined and vaccinated. They are a little shellshocked, but with love and care they'll soon open up.
All three are now looking for loving homes.
Soybean: female, DOB approx March 2011
Peanut: female, DOB approx March 2011
Sesame: male, DOB approx March 2011

Henry's rescue~Feb 28th 2011

A volunteer was out walking her dogs and when she came back home there was this little fella sitting at the main gate. After a little chasing she managed to get a lead on him and he happily followed her home. His fur was so matted and looked so painful that the volunteer decided not to wait until tomorrow to take him to a groomer, so she herself decided to shave off the mats and then the next day take him to be tidied up and washed. The mats were terrible and it took over an hour and half to shave him completely.

He's a male Poodle we think. He has no chip but was wearing a yellow collar with a bell on it. It seems he's been a stray for quite some time. His teeth are in terrible condition. He has also had his vocal cords cut, so he has a raspy bark.
He will be taken for a blood test and be neutered this week.

Then he'll be looking for a forever home. He's friendly and well behaved.
This little man seems to have had it very rough recently so we hope to find him a comfortable happy home soon. please contact 02-28338820 or email to adoptions@animalstaiwan.org

Kato needs a home~

ADOPT a loving Taiwanese friend …for life~

Woof Woof Woof! My name is KATO.

I used to hang around near a furniture store in Neihu. Sometimes, some nice people would give me food and that’s how I survived all these days out there as a stray. Rain or shine, I’d be there so I could get something to keep my tummy happy.

Although most people were kind to me, some people did not like to see me there. You know, we dogs can feel if a person is friendly and means good to us or not. So when I sensed that a person did not have good intension, I used to hide or run away as fast as I could. I almost got run by cars several times by doing this.

One day, I didn’t have the same luck and a car hit me on my left rump. It hurt but I kept walking to move myself to a safer place, free of traffic. I tried to treat my wound by leaking it but it wasn’t getting any better…. It was also so cold and rainy on those days after the accident that I did not have much energy to go begging for food again.

Three days after the accident, I was so tired. I did not have anything to eat and my legs were shivering. I just wanted to lay down for a while and rest. AT this time, I was very blessed that a nice lady noticed me and tried to wake me up. After several calls, I was able to stand up. I was scared in the beginning, but somehow, I knew she was trying to help me. She held me in her arms and took me to the Vet.

The Vet was very nice to me. He cleaned my wound and had drawn my blood to check my health. The Vet was surprised to see that I took good care of myself while living in the streets. The lady who rescued me was also happy to know that I was a healthy dog and the open wound could be easily fixed with few stitches.

I spent four days at the Vet and I am now neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped. The nice lady who rescued me is now my foster Mom and she said she will help me find a permanent home. She said, I could not go back to where I was found because that area has too much traffic and I could have another accident again.

I’m trying my best to show my foster mom my appreciation. I know she doesn’t have enough space in her house to keep me because she already has two dogs who are now like my brother and sister. They are teaching me to use the bathroom and walk on the leash properly so I can be adopted more easily. I have fun with my brothers. We play every day and my foster Mom trusts me fully. She allows me to stay loose in the house and I promised her that I will behave well.

My name KATO, is inspired after the handsome Taiwanese actor, Jay Chou, who has just played the role of Kato in Green Hornet movie and is my foster mom’s favorite. Please, give me a chance to be your forever companion. I only need a chance to love someone unconditionally as this is my nature..
Please call Mayumi if you can give Kato a home: Mayumi@animalstaiwan.org or 02-28338820 beofe 6PM or 0910 221 501 after 6pm.

Sparky's recovery from eye ball removal sugery.

photo notes :: Sparky is curious playing with the phone.

Sparky's recovering very well after both of his eyeballs were removed during sugery last month.

(to see Sparky's rescue story : http://www.wretch.cc/blog/animalstw/32417886

He already is very brave to jump up and down from the cages and furniture in the staff room.

He no longer needs to wear his cone, and now he doesn't have the discomfort that his eyeballs were causing him. He is now more playful than before.

Please watch the film ( Sparky gave himself a bath only a few days after the sugery.)

Need your help in many ways.

Hi,

You may or may not know that i recently came across 6 puppies on my mountain. 3 female and 3 male. They are currently just over 2 months old. THey have recieved their 1st vaccination and i will be taking care of their other vaccinations and de-sexing.

I have been contacted by a friend in Vancouver who wants to adopt one of them and has found homes for 2 more. I'll be sending the females to her.

Here's why i'm sending you this email. Please see if you can help in any way.

1. We need a passenger to Vancouver direct from Taiwan between 5th-30th august flying with China Airlines or EVA air

2. We need donations to help pay for the flight, crate, etc (my friend in canada is also collecting money). Any extra money will of course be donated to AT. I will be keeping a record of all expences and donations and will make it public on Facebook.

3. Homes in Taiwan for the remaining puppies. Of course i would prefer to home these puppies in Taiwan, but it's not that easy. However if you have friends or friends of friends who have an interest in adopting puppies please let me know. There are 5 more somewhere on my mountain but the 2nd mother has hidden them well.

so please help in whatever way you can, posting on your facebook account, emailing friends or just asking around. The two most urgent are the flights and homes.

Thank you for any help you can give.
( please contact 02-2833-8820 or <liza@animalstaiwan.org> if you can help in anyway. )

Usha - long hair male - black

Megan - short hair - female - brown
Akon - short hair - male - black

Rollo - long hair - male - white

Mercy - long hair - female - white

A Wish for Otis

2010/03/10 -- A wish for Otis
=============================
Warning: The following photos may be disturbing.
Otis lost the paws on his hind legs after getting caught in a gin trap. He has also become blind, although we have not yet determined the reason he lost his sight.

Two weeks ago, someone spotted Otis dragging his injured and bloody body down the road trying to beg for food. A kind Samaritan had been feeding Otis for the past six years, but was never able to catch or pet him.

On March 8, rescuers finally succeeded in catching Otis with a net. Otis was treated and had his legs bandaged by the vet. He is now recuperating at the Animals Taiwan holding center. Otis is frightened of people, so it must be difficult for him to have the bandages on his hind legs changed every day. Otis must be in a great deal of pain but we hope that his treatment will be successful. We hope that one day soon Otis will be like Judy, a carefree spirit who runs and plays with the help of a wheelchair.

Urgent need of homes ( Chihuahuas )

Animals Taiwan is in urgent need of homes (permanent and foster) for small breed dogs.

Last year Animals Taiwan investigated a complaint against a man believed to be breeding small dogs from his back yard. On investigation it seemed this claim was true. Over 20 dogs were found to be kept in small cages without fresh water and the cages were rusty and rarely cleaned. The dogs had spent all of their lives in these cages and were unsocialized. None of the dogs had been de-sexed and most weren’t chipped or vaccinated. The man claimed he wasn’t breeding but when a female came into heat he put a male in the cage with her to “calm her down” and sometimes accidentally she became pregnant. He also said that he wasn’t selling the animals, but if people took them they would give him a “Hong Bao” (red envelope containing money). After contacting the government, TMAIH, the man, Mr Ong ( 翁先生), was given a warning to improve the conditions of the animals and to get them vaccinated and chipped. Animals Taiwan was able to convince him to hand over 8 of the dogs which included 3 puppies.Animals Taiwan was fortunate enough to be able to get all 8 dogs adopted in a short period of time.Animals Taiwan was recently informed that Mr Ong was continuing to breed the remaining dogs and their living conditions hadn’t improved. The TMAIH was contacted again and an investigator was sent to the scene. There are now 35 small dogs kept in the same conditions as before. Most of these dogs have had their vocal cords cut as the neighbours complained about the noise. They have lived their entire lives in these small, dirty, damp cages and have still not been de-sexed or vaccinated. Mr Ong has agreed to hand over most of the dogs to Animals Taiwan for adoption. Animals Taiwan is continuing to work with TMAIH to insure that the remaining dogs will not only be kept in better conditions but they will also be de-sexed and vaccinated to insure that Mr Ong is unable to continue to breed these poor little animals. Monday March 15th Animals Taiwan will be going to pick up between 10-15 of the dogs to be de-sexed and vaccinated. We are asking for people to come forward and help with re-homing of these animals. Once these 10-15 are re-homed we can then get more out of these terrible conditions and get them to a better place. The dogs are aged between 1-4 years old. They will be vaccinated and de-sexed before re-homed (either to permanent homes or foster homes). Please contact Liza@animalstaiwan.org 02-2833-8820 if you can help in any way.
