Ojo the one eyed kitten would like a loving home!

Hi I’m Ojo and I was luckily rescued by a very kind lady. I was spotted in the mountains and my eye had such a bad infection that my eyeball was protruding. The lady knew I couldn’t survive like that so she quickly caught me and took me to the vet for medical attention. The vet knew my eye couldn’t be saved so I underwent an operation to remove my eye. I have been on meds for the infection and I’m now very fit and healthy.

Only having one eye won’t stop me. I’m super brave. I’m verysweet but still a little scared, but that’s because I’ve been through so much. But if you’re willing to show me a little patience I know I will warm up to youquickly.

If you would like to meet me and maybe take me home pleasecontact Animals Taiwan 02-28338820 or email adoptions@animalstaiwan.org查看更多— 在 Animals Taiwan 台灣動物協會

Princess Lea & Luke Skywalker need your support

Two little puppies were found curled up on the side of the road this morning (March 29th).

They have a very bad skin condition and were so weak they could hardly stand. Animals Taiwan picked them up and took them straight to the vet.

2012/03/29
2012/03/29

They also have a touch of the flu and are now recieving medication for thier skin and the flu.

It will take a lot of love, patience and money to get them both back to health,
but AT never gives up on its rescues and we'll do everything we can to help them.

2012/03/29
Once some water and food was placed in front of them the dived straight in.
We'll be keeping everyone updated on their progress.
We've named them
Princess Lea and
Luke Skywalker
and we hope the force will be with them.

Luke is looking better and has much more energy.

However, Lea is still struggling a bit.

2012/04/02

 Luke loves attention and cuddles,
but Lea is still a little shy.

Lea and Luke have made a very remarkable and quick recovery.

Their fur is now completely grown back and they have put on weight. They have recieved thier first vaccinations and will be spayed and neutered by the end of May.

They are ready for adoption and would love happy homes.

2012 Animals Taiwan Spring Clean

4.27.2012

Panini the Kitten is looking for perfect home!

Hey!!!            Hey!!!
Play with me!!!
  Hey!!!
Who are you?!
      My name’s Panini!

I don’t remember much about my early life - my earliest memory is coming to Animals Taiwan with my sister, Fucasha. We had a lot of fun, running around and playing together.
Now it’s just me .
The hoo-mans tell me that my sister has gone to her furr-ever home, and they hope I can find one too!
I want to go soon…I want lots of new places to explore, and new friends to play with!!!

PANINI is an incredibly excitable 7 month old kitten, with unlimited energy and enthusiasm.

She loves to play, and will chase anything she finds on the floor (toy mice, balls, pens, insects, feet…!)

She also loves to be stroked, and will happily sit on your lap – until she sees something she’d like to play with!

She is relaxed around everyone, and is a wonderfully sweet-natured kitten.

Age: Oct 2011   Breed: Tabby Mix   Sex: Female

Spayed and Vaccinated

Spring has arrived - March Report

Finally we are starting to see some good weather, but of course as springis here we’ll also have those spring showers which always catch us off guard.

March has been a busy month with many events and visits to our centre. Weare always grateful for our volunteers and supporters who come by and visit usto help clean and also walk our dogs. We have some very wonderful regularvolunteers who make sure they come each week and walk the dogs. The dogs reallyenjoy this time out and about and it really helps with their chances ofadoption if they are good on the lead and well socialized. We’d liketo say a big thank you to Lorena Poitras and Kim Phillips who have started up amonthly dog walking club. The firstevent was held in March which saw over 20 people coming by the centre to walkthe dogs and meet everyone. It was a very successful day and everyone had agreat time. This will be a regular event and we hope more people can join.

Another really successful event of March was the UK in Taiwan event. Thanks to our amazing volunteers we managed to raise over $60,000 and also hada rescue that day. We’d like to say a big thank you to the organizers of theevent for including us and we look forward to next year’s event.

We’d also like to say thank you to Tong Wu University who included us intheir event and helped to promote us and raise money.

If you wouldlike to hold an event for Animals Taiwan or have an event where you’d like AnimalsTaiwan to come along, please contact liza@animalstaiwan.org.

Rescues

NiZuay was found by asupporter of Animals Taiwan walking the streets. She couldn’t believe such asmall and old dog was out alone on the streets. She was sure she was lost. Shecalled Animals Taiwan and asked for our help as she was unable to foster due tohaving too many dogs of her own. We took NiZuay to the vet for a check up andchip scan and we were delighted to find she had a chip. However, once we calledthe owner we were told that we had got the wrong number. We decided not to pushthe issue any further as we believe NiZuay deserves someone who will love herno matter what. She’s 15 years old and has a few health problems which includebeing nearly blind, nearly deaf, not many teeth and a few lumps and bumps, butshe’s very active and loving. She’s nice a quiet and just wants to be aroundpeople. At only 3kg she’s tiny and really no trouble at all. We hope to findher that loving home where she can live out her senior years.

Our Chairperson was called by a neighbor who knows she’s involved withanimal rescue about two little pups on the side of the road in really badshape. So our Chairperson went off to investigate and came across Princess Leaand Luke Skywalker. They really were in bad shape. Lea was so weak she couldn’tstand up. They were both malnourished and have extreme scabies. Our Chairpersonscooped them up and put them in the car and went off to the centre. It was ahuge concern as we thought they may have parvo or distemper two very contagiousdiseases. However, after a check at the vet it was found that they just had atouch of the flu. They are now slowly putting on weight and with regularmedical baths their fur is starting to grow back. It’s going to be a long process, but we know they will fight though it and be the beautiful dogs they were meantto be. They are super friendly and loving and we hope once they are well theywill find loving homes.

During the UK in Taiwan event we were asked to come and take a look at adog wandering round the road. We went out to investigate and met Richard, a 3legged dog who was very tired and weak and also had a lot of ticks. He hadalready had his front leg amputated but the stitches were still in and therewas a slight swelling. He was friendly and sweet, so we decided to take himback to the centre to get him checked out and see if we could find his originalowner. We took him to the vet and got him neutered and the stitches in his legtaken out and we found that he has Ehlichia Canis a tick born disease. He isnow receiving medication for this and is looking much healthier and happier. He’s now walking happily on the lead and we’re looking hard to find this handsomeyoung man a happy home.

During February after our rescue of the6 black and white puppies we were told by some neighbours that there wasanother litter of puppies nearby on a farm. We went to investigate and found 8puppies who were only a week or so old. We talked to the farmer and he agreedto keep the puppies on the farm with the mother coming to feed them for onemonth, until the puppies could eat by themselves. The farmer was true to hisword and kept them safe. We went to pick them up and brought them to thecentre. There were 7 males and 1 female, we’ve named them King Arthur, King Uther, Guinevere, Sir Perceval, Sir Galahad, Sir Lancelot, Merlin and Sir Bedivier. We are looking for loving homes for these lovely puppies.

While out on our CNR projects a dog with a chain collar was reported to us and we went toinvestigate. It was found that the chain collar had bitten into the dog’s neckand caused a very serious infection and open wounds. We managed to catch thedog and get him medical care. Once his neck has healed he’ll be returned to hisfeeding area.

Adoptions

Again this month adoptions are low, we are working hard to try new avenuesto increase our adoption rates, these include more updates on our facebookabout each of our animals, more posting on Chinese websites and starting inApril we’ll be attending the Mucha Flower market once a month for a two dayadoption event. We hope all of these ideas will help push our adoptions up andfind our loving furry friends happy homes. We not only want to find our furriesloving homes, but without them going out we can’t help more as we only havelimited space.

However, this month we do have two happy tails

Bailey finally found his forever home. He has gone to a loving family whoespecially went looking for a new home where Bailey would be able to live withthem and they would have places to walk him and give him the open space heneeds. We are so happy for him.

Also our Timid Mango has found a happy home. Her new mommy understands she is a little afraid but is willing to work with her and give her the space andpatience she needs to build her confidence. We are so happy when loving peoplelike this come to adopt from us. Each animal is unique and just needs a littleunderstanding.

CNR/TNR

During the month of March we have completed 16 cat TNRs. The numbers arestill low due to the weather. It is much more difficult to trap cats when it’sraining and we also want to make sure the weather is warm enough that when theyare placed back after their rest they won’t have any complications due to thecold. So from the beginning of 2012 until now we have competed 174 cats.

Our dog CNR projects are also takingoff. This month we have caught 28 dogs which include 25 females and 3 males. Wetry to concentrate on each area to make sure we get all the dogs in that areabefore moving on to a new one. This means it takes time as once the dogs knowwho we are it is much more difficult to catch them.

More news

We’d like to give everyone a heads up for the following month’s events.

As we’ve said starting in April we’ll be attending the Mucha Flower Marketonce a month for a two day adoption event. Our first adoption event here willbe on April 21st and 22nd from 9am to 6pm.We’ll be bringing some of our foster dogs and also the puppies. We’ll bepromoting adoption and trying to raise awareness of the importance of adoption. We really hope this will increase people’s interest in adoption.

The second adoption event at the Mucha Flower market will be on May 26th and 27th

We’ll also be holding a huge book sale outside TLI in Tiamue on May 5th.We are very grateful for TLI who has kindly offered the space outside theirschool for us to hold this event.

Also in May we’ll be holding an exciting fun event in Fulong. A wonderfulsupporter of Animals Taiwan “The Fu Bar” will be hosting “The Fu Bar BeachBash” on May 19th. Tickets are $1000 a head and they include the busride to and from FuLong and food at the FuBar. There will also be lucky drawsand fun and games. A great way to start the summer off and help the animals.

November's Report

Here is the report for November, hope you like the Read
Wow! November has been a jam packed month, with many rescues and quite a few adoptions as well as worthwhile events.
Remember Christmas is just round the corner and we still have our facebook flea market page as well as now a second hand book page too.
https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=188167141270148#!/media/set/?set=a.10150412257384248.380458.100845399247&type=3

Our last Grandma Nitti’s flea market for this year will be on December 17th From 4pm to 10pm.
Also Animals Taiwan is putting out an appeal for any one who could donate a large refrigerator. One of ours has just broken and with Chinese New Year quickly approaching we’ll need one for the long holiday. Please contact our centre 02-28338820 if you can help in this area.

Mare who has been fostering Kiki, one of our blind cats, for a long time has decided to adopt her. Kiki has become one of the family and Mare couldn’t imagine her home without her. We are so happy for Kiki and know she’s in very good hands.
Denise who is Mistletoe’s foster mommy has also decided to adopt Mistletoe. Mistletoe was always a reserved and shy cat, but since living with Denise she has opened up and is becoming a loving house cat. Denise will be moving back to Canada next year and we’re looking for someone who would be able to take Mistletoe back to Canada for her.
Melody has also finally been adopted. Melody came up to us during a CNR project in the mountains. She’s been with us for a few months and has finally found her forever mommy.
Three more kittens have also found loving homes Puma, Zoro, and Sasha. We are so happy they have all gone to great homes where they will be loved forever.
And we are also so happy to announce that Henry the Poodle has gone on a tryout. Little Henry has gone on 3 tryouts so far and none of them have worked out for various reasons. Poor Henry never gave up though, he always has high sprits and greets everyone with love and kisses. He is the perfect companion and even though he is a senior dog he has a lot of energy and love to give. We hope this tryout goes well and Henry has finally found his forever home.

Three kittens were resced from an area near Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall. We’ve named them Domino, Checkers and Ace. They came to us with Otodectes and Ascarid, but after medical care they are doing well and are very healthy, active and friendly. They now looking for forever homes.

One of our TNR volunteers rescued two wonderful cats Chien Chein and Xiao Dai. Poor Chein Chein was a victim of a car accident but after medical care and love and attention he has recovered well.

Xiao Dai had a serious eye infection which has left her blind, but as we have seen with our previous rescues this doesn’t hold her back. They are both very loving and affectionate cats and are now waiting for that special person to take them home.
SanBan was rescued from a TNR area in Taipei. She was found bleeding with a broken leg. Her leg was too badly hurt to heal so it was decided that she would be better off if it was removed. She has recovered well from her surgery and is now healthy. She is still a little wild but we are working with her to help her become more friendly and loving. We hope after a while she’ll settle down and we’ll be able to find her a loving home.
Hannah the Husky was rescued from a TNR area where people where feeding her but she was very thin and malnourished. She’d had a litter of five puppies about a month or so earlier. Four of the puppies had already been taken by people which just left one, Cartier. Cartier was taken into foster care and has already found a happy home. Hannah has now been spayed and is ready for her forever home. She’s super friendly to both people and other dogs and we’re sure she’ll find a home soon.
Baily the Border Collie/Collie mix was found wondering round a department store. He was very nervous and had no collar or microchip. He’s been neutered and vaccinated and is now looking for that loving home. He’s still a little nervous but has no aggression.
Four more kittens were rescued from a bus station. They are super friendly and loving. They are all healthy and we’ve named them Ramese, Kesi, Mesi and Tux. We know they will find loving homes very quickly.
Van Gogh was rescued a month or so ago by a lady and he’s been on several adoptions. However, because he was scared and not sure of his surroundings he was a little protective and could sometimes snap at people, so he was then sent to the Ping Shi shelter. We decided to put him in foster care to see if we could adust his temperamen. After a couple of weeks of foster care he has settled down well and now doesn’t snap at all. He knows what he is allowed to do and is a very loving dog. Van Gogh is a one eared red poodle. It seems he was born with only one ear and this could be a result of the bad breeding that goes on in Taiwan. We know Van will find a loving home soon.
A very sweet tiny kitten who we’ve named Alina was rescued while one of our volunteers was doing TNR. She’s very sweet and healthy and we know she’ll be snapped up soon.
A poor little doggie was hit by a car and has been severly paralyzed. He was very close to passing, but a couple of very kind volunteers helped him recover, but they soon realized they had taken on too much and couldn’t afford his care and also the time it takes to care for him. So they decided to take him to Taipei City Shelter. We have good relations with the shelter and we were called in to see if we could offer any help. We decided to do all we could to help this little boy.He is now at the centre under daily care. He has very bad open wounds on all his four legs and is unable to stand by himself at this point. We are looking into getting a specially made wheelchair for him. We will keep everyone updated on his progress.
North, South and West have gone into foster care and we hope with a little one on one attention they will soon find a loving home to call their own.
Not all our rescues go our way and we have some sad news this month.
A dog paralyzed from the waist down and with very swollen legsand paws was noticed lying in a park by one of our volunteers. He was taken immediately to the vet for care. Unfortunatly after 2 days of intensive care at the vet he still passed away. He was too weak and his injuries were too severe. We know he is in a better place now and we hope he felt loved and cared for in his last few days.
A little pup was caught during a CNR project. He was found to be very weak and had a neck injury. On further investigation it was found that he had a rubber band stuck around his neck, which had caused a serious infection and had damaged his windpipe. Unfortunately the little boy was too weak and tramatized by the injury and passed away during surgery.

During November we completed 90 cat TNRs. During the winter months we will see a slight decline in cat TNR as we need to make sure they are healthy and well before they can be caught and released. This brings the total since April up to 943.
Also during November we have completed 5 female and 8 male CNR dogs. CNR for dogs is always lower as we need to have space for them to recover before releasing them.

We’d also like to say a huge thank you to Nestle for their continued support of dog and cat food for our CNR/TNR projects.

We are able to continue these rescues and adoptions thanks to your generosity.

Moby and me

Moby and Me

We wanted to rescue a dog. I had just quit my job as a journalist in Singapore when we moved to Taiwan in April 2008. Trapped at home while my hubby Mun Yew slaved at work, I thought how nice to have a dog for companionship. I could take it with me on my hikes up Elephant Mountain or when I popped down the street to the Wellcome.

We had a look at the pet shops on Keelung Road and were quite taken with the puppies. But deep down, I felt it would be much better to give an abandoned dog a home. That’s how we found ourselves at the Animals Taiwan shelter in Beitou. It was our first time in any sort of animal shelter. The dogs were frantically barking and leaping up and down. Some had their legs amputated and were scurrying around in wheelchairs.

None really caught our eye but as we were leaving, Mun Yew spotted a long-haired dog that looked like a wolf. She stood on a table, high above the other dogs. She was calm and did not bark at all. When they took her out of the pen, she didn’t acknowledge us at all. “She’s a very shy dog,” said Arnold, the young volunteer there. “She’s not a dog dog.” What did that mean? She doesn’t like other dogs, he replied.

We later found out she didn’t even like people. In fact, she’s terrified of strangers - as well as umbrellas, suitcases, and anything that’s made of black leather. She had probably been cruelly abused. Moby was found by animal rescuers in Jinshan with a broken leg. She was tied to a tree and left to die.

With the two of us, from day one, she has been the best dog in the world. But if someone comes to our apartment, she goes beserk with fear. In the park, she tries to attack other dogs. At the vet, we have to muzzle her. I can’t take her up Elephant Mountain. I don’t even dare take her to the Wellcome.

We took her to Dr Dog, the training school. And quit after two classes. We bought celebrity dog whisperer Cesar Milan’s books and watched his TV show. Then came Angus, our Taiwanese dog trainer. Except he doesn’t train dogs, he trains owners. Be the pack leader, he would bellow in Chinese. Don’t spoil her.

During each session, we would make progress. But after he left, we were inconsistent. I hand fed her if she wouldn’t eat. Put her on my lap when she was upset. I flunked as an alpha male and Mun Yew was only marginally better.

Three years on, Moby has made some progress. She eats only after we give her the OK signal. She knows basic commands like “stay”, “rest” and “ball”. She never jumps onto the sofa or enters the bedrooms. She’s always so happy when we come home, relieved we haven’t abandoned her.

But she still goes berserk when someone comes to the house. She still attacks small dogs in the park. She’s not the type of canine companion I had in mind when I harassed the hubby for a dog. But through her, I’ve learnt to be more patient, more disciplined and more accepting of little flaws. I’ve learnt that you don’t always get what you want but that life can be more interesting and fulfilling because of that. And, best of all, our dog’s brought us closer together. We set out to rescue a dog but in many ways, Moby rescued us.

Sunita and Mun Yew moved back to Singapore at the end of 2011. They took Moby with them.
